Scientists Create a Self-Healing Material That Could Make Wearable Devices Last Much Longer and Cut Electronic Waste
Wearable technology is becoming a bigger part of everyday life. From fitness bands and health monitoring patches to electronic skin and virtual reality devices, soft electronic sensors are helping people track their health and interact with technology in new ways. However, these devices still have one major weakness—they are easily damaged. Repeated bending, stretching, rubbing, or accidental cuts can break the tiny electrical circuits inside soft sensors. Once damaged, many of these devices stop working and are often thrown away, adding to the growing problem of electronic waste. Another challenge is that many soft electronic materials are made from petroleum-based plastics that are difficult to recycle and harmful to the environment.
