A remarkable discovery by a researcher at the University of Limerick could change what historians know about the early development of telescopes and the scientific work of the legendary astronomer Galileo Galilei.
Dr. José María Moreno Madrid, a researcher at the University of Limerick’s School of History and Geography, has uncovered a previously unknown 17th-century technical description of a four-lens terrestrial telescope that was explicitly described as being “fabricatum a Galilaeo”—Latin for “manufactured by Galileo.”
The discovery is particularly important because the telescope described in the document does not appear to follow the simple optical design that Galileo became famous for. Instead, it was a more complex four-lens instrument, suggesting that experimentation with such telescopes may have begun much earlier than historians previously believed.
A 1666 Manuscript Holds a Major Clue
Moreno Madrid made the discovery while examining a manuscript written in 1666 by Ignacio Muñoz, a Spanish Dominican friar with a background in mathematics and astronomy.
The document, titled De Tellescopiis Stellarum, contains a detailed, component-by-component examination of a telescope that Muñoz identified as having been made by Galileo.
According to current historical records, the earliest four-lens telescopes are generally dated to around 1643–1645. Telescope production using more advanced configurations then became increasingly widespread across Europe during the following decades.
But Muñoz's description raises the possibility that this technology was being explored considerably earlier.
If the telescope really was manufactured by Galileo, the history of four-lens telescope experimentation could potentially be pushed back to no later than 1630.
That would be a major revision to the established timeline.
A Telescope Unlike Galileo’s Famous Design
Galileo is closely associated with the early astronomical telescope. His telescopes typically used a convex objective lens and a concave eyepiece, producing an upright image suitable for astronomical observation.
The instrument described by Muñoz was different.
His manuscript describes a four-lens terrestrial telescope with a reverse-tapered body and an erecting eyepiece. The lenses were convex and arranged with specific spacing, including a separation of approximately twice their focal lengths.
Even more importantly, Muñoz did not simply mention the telescope. He carefully analyzed its construction and optical arrangement.
The manuscript reportedly contains detailed drawings and diagrams, giving researchers an unusually valuable look at how such an early telescope was constructed.
This makes the document potentially significant not only for understanding Galileo but also for understanding the evolution of telescope technology during the 17th century.
How Did the Telescope Reach Muñoz?
The story behind the manuscript is almost as fascinating as the telescope itself.
According to Muñoz's account, the instrument was given to him by Antonio Sebastián de Toledo Molina y Salazar, the Marquis of Mancera and viceroy of New Spain.
At the time, Muñoz was attempting to return to Spain after being exiled in Portuguese India.
Muñoz had previously traveled from Spain to the Philippines and had become involved in an unsuccessful attempt to establish a new Dominican order there. Following his exile, he wrote to King Philip IV of Spain proposing what he claimed was a revolutionary nautical idea that could improve the performance of Spanish fleets.
He hoped that the king would support his journey back to Spain aboard the Manila Galleon, which traditionally stopped in New Spain.
However, the viceroy of New Spain was apparently skeptical of Muñoz's scientific abilities.
Rather than simply accepting his claims, the viceroy apparently wanted evidence of Muñoz's scientific expertise. He therefore asked him to conduct a detailed examination of the telescope.
That examination ultimately produced the 1666 manuscript now attracting historical attention.
A Possible Connection to the Spanish Royal Court
The possible connection between Galileo, the telescope and the Spanish court adds another intriguing layer to the discovery.
Historical accounts indicate that Galileo presented one large and two smaller telescopes to King Philip IV and his wife. Galileo hoped that his gifts might help him gain favor at the Spanish court and improve his chances of receiving a substantial reward for solving the famous longitude problem.
Moreno Madrid suggests that one of these Galileo-made instruments—or another telescope connected to Galileo—could eventually have reached the Marquis of Mancera.
If that possibility is correct, the telescope examined by Muñoz could have been passed to Mancera as a gift from the Spanish royal family, perhaps in recognition of his political and diplomatic achievements.
However, there is currently no surviving correspondence that directly documents such a transfer.
That missing evidence is one of the reasons researchers remain cautious about making a definitive attribution.
A Mystery That Has Survived for Centuries
There is another major problem when trying to identify surviving telescopes made by Galileo.
Galileo reportedly insisted that he never sold and would never sell his telescopes. Yet, despite his enormous importance in the history of astronomy, no telescope surviving from the first half of the 17th century can be attributed to him with complete certainty.
Two telescopes preserved in the Museum of Florence have traditionally been associated with Galileo, but their attribution remains debated.
There is also another important gap in the historical record: Galileo did not leave behind detailed technical analyses of his own telescopes.
This makes Muñoz's manuscript especially interesting.
If its attribution is eventually confirmed, it could become the most detailed surviving technical analysis of a telescope demonstrably made by Galileo.
And there is an intriguing irony: the telescope would not be the familiar Galilean design that carries his name, but a more unusual four-lens configuration.
Why the Discovery Matters
Even if future research fails to prove that Galileo personally manufactured the telescope, the manuscript remains historically valuable.
Muñoz was not simply recording an object he happened to see. He had sufficient knowledge of mathematics and astronomy to examine the instrument in considerable technical detail.
The manuscript therefore provides researchers with evidence about how telescopes were understood, analyzed and constructed during the 17th century.
It also highlights something that is sometimes overlooked in the history of science: early scientific instruments were not only tools for research. They could also serve as objects of prestige, status and political influence.
A telescope associated with Galileo would have carried enormous symbolic value at a time when astronomy was rapidly transforming humanity's understanding of the universe.
Could This Rewrite Galileo’s Telescope History?
For now, the discovery should be viewed as an important possibility rather than a confirmed rewriting of history.
The phrase identifying the telescope as manufactured by Galileo is significant, but historians still need additional documentary or physical evidence to establish its provenance beyond doubt.
Nevertheless, the discovery opens a fascinating new question: Was Galileo experimenting with four-lens terrestrial telescopes more than a decade before historians previously thought?
If future research confirms the connection, the discovery could move the beginning of four-lens telescope experimentation back to around 1630 and add an entirely new chapter to Galileo's already extraordinary scientific legacy.
For Moreno Madrid, the hope is that this manuscript will encourage researchers to search more widely for forgotten documents and surviving instruments.
After centuries of scientific history, the next major clue about Galileo's telescopes may still be waiting somewhere in an archive—or perhaps hidden within an old scientific instrument that has yet to be properly identified.
