For more than 100 years, astronomers have searched for a hidden partner orbiting one of the most famous stars in the night sky. Now, that long journey has finally reached a historic milestone. Scientists have found strong evidence that Betelgeuse, the giant red star in the constellation Orion, is not alone. It has a faint companion star, likely named Betelgeuse B, orbiting around it.
The discovery was made using the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope (ESO’s VLT) in Chile. A team led by French astronomer Miguel Montargès captured the clearest image yet of the suspected companion star. The findings, published in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics, mark a major achievement in the study of one of the most closely watched stars in the universe.
“This is the conclusion of a century-long quest,” said Montargès, an astronomer at the Observatoire de Paris-PSL, France, and lead author of the study. “We have shown that Betelgeuse is not single; it is accompanied by a faint stellar companion.”
A Famous Star With a Hidden Secret
Betelgeuse is one of the brightest stars visible from Earth without a telescope. Located about 640 light-years away in the constellation Orion, it has fascinated humans for thousands of years. The star is easily recognized because of its reddish color and its changing brightness.
Unlike many stars that shine steadily, Betelgeuse regularly becomes brighter and dimmer. These changes have puzzled scientists for decades. One possible explanation was that another star might be orbiting it and influencing its behavior.
Astronomers began searching for this possible companion nearly a century ago. However, finding a small, faint star next to a huge and extremely bright supergiant star proved to be a major challenge.
“For years, astronomers searched for this companion without success,” Montargès explained. The breakthrough finally came when new predictions suggested exactly when the companion would be easiest to observe.
A Prediction That Changed Everything
In 2024, two scientific studies predicted that Betelgeuse’s companion would reach its greatest distance from the main star in December of that year. This separation would make it easier to detect.
Taking advantage of this opportunity, Montargès and his team observed Betelgeuse using ESO’s Very Large Telescope in December 2024. The researchers then spent several months carefully processing and analyzing the data.
At first, Montargès was not confident that the telescope would be powerful enough to detect the companion.
“Honestly, I thought we did not have the sensitivity to detect Betelgeuse B as it was predicted,” he said. “Because it is more massive than predicted, we see it!”
The new observations revealed that Betelgeuse B is not a small object. Scientists had previously estimated that the companion might have a mass similar to the Sun. However, the latest results suggest that it is much larger, with a mass around two to three times that of the Sun.
The discovery surprised researchers because Betelgeuse has been studied extensively for generations.
“The fact that we can still discover a nearby companion, more massive and brighter than the Sun, around such a well-studied star is remarkable,” Montargès said. “These are among the best moments in science: seeing something new and unexpected.”
A Powerful New Way to See the Universe
The discovery of Betelgeuse B was possible because scientists directly captured light from the companion star itself. This process is called direct imaging.
The observations were made using the SPHERE instrument installed on ESO’s Very Large Telescope in Chile’s Atacama Desert. SPHERE was originally designed to search for planets outside our solar system, known as exoplanets. However, scientists have now shown that the technology can also reveal hidden stars near much larger and brighter stars.
“This is a remarkable example of how advanced instruments and data-processing methods can open new doors in astronomy,” said Anthony Boccaletti, a co-author of the study and astronomer at the Observatoire de Paris.
Although the evidence is extremely strong, researchers want to make one more observation. They plan to observe Betelgeuse again after one year, when the companion should appear on the opposite side of the main star.
“We still need to observe it in one year on the other side of the star, but there is very little space left for doubt,” Montargès said.
A New Mystery About Betelgeuse’s Future
Betelgeuse has attracted worldwide attention in recent years because of a dramatic drop in its brightness. In 2019 and 2020, the star appeared much dimmer than usual, leading some people to wonder if it was about to explode.
As a massive red supergiant, Betelgeuse is expected to eventually end its life in a powerful supernova explosion. However, astronomers later discovered that the unusual dimming was not caused by an explosion. Instead, observations from ESO’s Very Large Telescope showed that a large cloud of dust had temporarily blocked some of the star’s light.
The discovery of Betelgeuse B now creates a new scientific question: could this companion star influence Betelgeuse’s future?
Stars that exist in pairs can affect each other in many ways. Their gravity can influence their growth, movement, and final stages of life. Scientists now want to understand whether Betelgeuse B could play a role in how and when Betelgeuse eventually explodes.
“The question is truly open whether this companion is going to have an impact on the evolution of the red supergiant,” Montargès said.
A New Chapter in Stellar Discovery
The discovery of Betelgeuse’s companion is more than just the finding of another star. It represents the success of decades of curiosity, patience, and technological progress.
Even after centuries of observation, the universe continues to surprise scientists. A star that has been studied for generations still had a hidden secret waiting to be uncovered.
